Gujarat tops in country for its hydro power capacity

Gandhinagar, Apr 3 (UNI) Gujarat ranked first in the country during 2005-2006, for its additional Hydro Power capacity of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project, which added 800 MW during the year amounting to 59.60 per cent of the total 1,340 MW Hydro Capacity of the nation.

During the last three years, Gujarat has contributed lion's share in Hydro Power potential addition in the entire country.

In 2004-2005, Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project's share was 44.3 per cent by adding 450 MW in the total 1,015 MW added at the national level, a statement by Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam said here today.

In the current year also, Gujarat continues its contribution to increase Hydro Power capacity. At the national level, the addition of Hydro Power Capacity was of 1,300 MW up to November 2006, out of which the contribution of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project was 200 MW, which amounts to 15.4 per cent.

In a recently published report of 'Powerline' magazine, the capacity addition in Hydro Power segment is likely to be maximum this year, since last three years. The same is due to contribution by the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project of Gujarat, Tehari and Vishnuprayag Project.

The canal Head Power House at Dam site of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project at Kevadia Colony, has generated 57 crore units of energy upto February 2007. Another River Bed Power House has generated 518 crore units energy, also by the end of February 2007.

Thus, both power houses at the dam site of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project have generated 575 crore units of energy. The market value of the same works out at about Rs 2,300 crore, the statement added.
