Patna, Apr 3 (UNI) Dissatisfied with the states decision to enhance the superannuation age for medical teachers from 60 to 62 years, government doctors today demanded a uniform retirement age for all doctors.

Patna Medical College Hospital(PMCH) Deputy Superintendent Dr Ashok Kumar hailed the decision, but added that the retirement age should be enhanced for both teaching and non-teaching staff. He said the vacant posts in both cadres were being filled with retired persons and an enhancement of the retirement age would bridge the gap to some extent. He also suggested a streamlining of promotional avenues to meet the crisis.

Joint director of Indira Gandhi Centre of Cardiology at PMCH Dr Basant Singh strongly supported enhancement of the retirement age for both cadres, saying that out of the total 6,000 non-teaching vacant posts about 50 per cent(about 2,500) were vacant. He said no appointment was made in this section for the past 15 years, while the posts were getting vacant following retirement of senior doctors every year.

Dr Singh welcomed the governments decision for increasing the age of superannuation of the medical teachers saying that it should be enhanced to 65 years at par with the national age of retirement for the medical teachers to fill the vacancies in this group. There was dearth of staff by about 11 per cent in the medical teaching section while several posts of junior doctors were also vacant in the medical colleges following which they were facing a de-recognition threat from the MCI(Medical Council of India).

The dearth of teachers and government doctors would be solved if the retirement age was increased in totality.

Dr Singh opined the enhancement in the age of superannuation only of the medical teachers would create a resentment among the governmenrt doctors.
