EC 'show cause' TO 2 BJP MLAs, 35 others for model code violation

New Delhi, Apr 3 (UNI) Two MLAs of the BJP are among 38 people issued 'show cause notice' by the Delhi Election Commission for violating the model code of conduct in the run-up to the forthcoming April 5 municipal elections.

Subhash Sachdeva and Saheb Singh Chauhan have been issued the 'show cause notice' after it was brought to the Commission's notice that the two 'appealed' to the public to vote for certain candidates through letters written on their letterpads, said Election Commissioner S P Marwah.

''The act of using the official letterpad for seeking votes is violative of the model code of conduct.'' The complaints were received today and they have been asked to explain the 'conduct', he added.

Meanwhile, 35 other contestants have been issued 'show cause notice' by the Commission on the basis of the written and authenticated oral complaints.

Most of them were for using the public address system during late night hours, said Mr Marwah adding that the complainants included students appearing for the board exams.

About 105 other complaints have also be referred to the observers, he said adding that 307 of the 9,649 booths have been declared 'sensitive' and 57 'hyper sensitive'.

The Commissioner also informed that an expenditure of nearly Rs 24 crore was being incurred in the poll process of which the major portion will be on the 'honorarium' given to the nearly 55,000 employees who report 'on duty' and the transportation costs.
