Andaman police conduct massive jungle raids

Port Blair, Apr 3 (UNI) The Andaman and Nicobar Police is conducting massive jungle raids in various remote pockets of the its scattered islands to curb illicit distillation of liquor.

''We have got additional force from Indian Reserve Battalion, who are carrying out combing operations in jungles of different far-flung islands,'' Ashok Chand the Superintendent of Police of Andaman District told UNI today.

Chand said that altogether 48 drums containing fermented wash of illicit liquor were destroyed during the operations in Pahargaon area thana area.

''Presently, combing operations are on in the jungles of Rangachang, Burma Nallah, Kodiyaghat, Anna Nagar, Macca Pahar and Bimblitan,'' he added.

Such raids have also been conducted regularly in the areas under other Police Stations and from January 1, 2007 to March 31, 2007, the Andaman District Police have arrested 1235 persons in 1220 cases, and recovered 1906 bottles (750 ml) of IMFL, 165 bottles of Beer (650 ml) 20431 bottles (750 ml) of illicit liquor, 840 kg of Handia, beside seizing 16 vehicles, including one engine dinghy used in the illegal transportation of illicit liquor.
