Gujarat: 16 Asiatic lions dead in Gir

Junagadh (Gujarat), Apr 3: Sixteen Asiatic lions have died in Gir Forest Sanctuary in the first three months of this year .

The deaths were reported in ten separate incidents, including two instances of professional poaching.

One lion died due to electrocution at Samir village in Una taluka of the district on January 4.

The carcass of a lion was found near Kamleshwar Dam in Sasan Gir range on February 12. The death was reported to be mysterious.

Two lion cubs died when they fell into an open well at Gadhiya village in Gir Sanctury on February 24.

Another cub died a natural death near Ashuadni hamlet on March 3.

Two lionesses and a lion cub were killed by professional poachers in Babaria Range in Gir Sanctury on March 3.

Two lion-cubs fell into an open well and died at Rabarika village in Tulsishyam Range in Gir Sanctuary on March 15.

The carcass of a lioness was found in Rajpipla village in Jasadhar range on March 30.

Two lions and a lion-cub were killed by poachers in Babaria Range on March 30.

A lion died in a fight with another lion near Timbarva village in Tulsi-shyam range on March 31 while a lion-cub died of hunger in Sasan Gir on the same day.
