Work on Madikeri-Subramanya road begins
Madikeri, Apr 2 (UNI) The long pending demand to construct the shortest route to Kukke Subramanya from this district via Somwarpet is ultimately taking shape with the contractors taking up works.
Kukke Subramanya, a well known pilgrimage centre in Dakshina Kannada district, would take just 42 km travel to reach from Somwarpet near here, once this road is complete. At present the circular route is forcing the pilgrims and other travelers coming from Mysore side to travel for 130 km.
The most panoramic stretch via Mallalli water falls, Bidalli, Pushpagiri hills would be a boon to develop tourism in Kodagu district. The Rs.62 lakh bridge work, which was incomplete had been taken up by a contractor with the insistence of the local MLA B A Jivijaya.
PWD officials said that a 23-km stretch in this tough terrain there is a need to build 20 bridges. Out of this, 13 bridges would be built by Kodagu PWD and seven by Sullya taluk PWD belonging to DK district. The total cost of the project had been put at Rs 28 crore.
Forest department had objected to the project earlier with a query but now the way is clear for implementation of this road project, officials said.
