Three persons killed in road accident

Shimla, Apr 2 (UNI) At least three persons were killed and 26 others injured when a state-run bus, reportedly driven by a mechanic, fell into a gorge near village Kuppa in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh last night.

Police sources today said according to statements of the injured passengers, both the driver and conductor were drunk and a mechanic was driving the vehicle on its way from Churag to Shimla.

The passengers said the driver and his friends sitting near the driver's seat were talking loudly which had diverted the attention of the mechanic behind the wheels, resulting in the accident.

A medical examination was being conducted and an inquiry had been ordered, police added.

Among those injured eight were referred to the Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital Shimla in serious condition. One of the injured was admitted at the Zonal Hospital Mandi. The remaining injured were hospitalised in Karsog Suni Hospitals. Some of the people were discharged after first aid, police said.

Those killed have been identified as Tilak Ram, Sita Ram and Bhola Dutt, all belonging to Karsog Sub-division.

The police have registered a case against the driver for negligent driving under sections 279 and 337 of the IPC. More sections are likely to be added after medical examinationS of the driver and conductor.
