Texas Instruments, IISc sign MoU for joint research

Bangalore, Apr 2 (UNI) Texas Instruments, the world leader in semiconductor industry, today entered into a pact with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) here to conduct open ended research in Digital Signal Processing (DSP), analog and mixed signal systems.

Speaking at a news conference here, TI President and CEO Richard K Templeton said IISc was the first institute outside the US with which TI had joined hands for the Leadership University Programme.

Under the programme, TI would partner IISc in conducting research with a focus on wireless, consumer, medical and industrial applications. IISc would receive four lakh US Dollars over five years for the programme.

''This partnership is based on IISc's innovation and research leadership, in-depth knowledge of technology and deep understanding of industry needs. We have a decade-long relationship with IISc and the funding will be used to support research programmes for industry specific applications as well as curriculum development in DSP, analog and mixed signal systems,'' he said.

IISc Associate Director Prof N Balakrishna said the research work, to be taken up by the two entities, would be in public domain and would be open ended projects.

Commenting on the new Indian semiconductor policy, Mr Templeton said it was a sign of the country gaining strength in growing its own technology. ''Anything that opens up the market and paves way for development of high technology is welcomed by TI. If India gains leading edge in foundry, we will be the first company to use it. We always support those who invent product and product ideas.'' Earlier, speaking to IISc students, he said TI's goal in joining with IISc through the Leadership University programme was to enable engineers to use electronics innovation to enrich the lives of people. ''India is recognised for its progress and needs similar higher education research programmes to sustain intellectual credibility and advancement of the industry,'' he said.
