Mumbai, Apr 2 (UNI) A local court today convicted a suspended police sub-inspector, attached to Pydhonie police, in a bribery case of 1998.

Delivering the judgement, Additional Session Court Judge V P Rothe said accused N B Patil committed an offence u/s 7 and 13(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act to suffer two-years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and pay a fine of Rs 10,000, in default he will have to undergo further RI for six-months.

According to prosecution, Sushila Chheda had lodged a false complaint at Phydhonie police station against Pritika Ambore that she had borrowed Rs 23 lakh from her (Ms Chheda) and now refused to pay the amount.

Accused Patil called Pritika Ambore at Phydhonie police station for an inquiry in this connection. Ms Ambore denied all charges levelled against her by Chheda. Despite that the accused had threatened that he can frame her in the case.

Thereafter, Patil told Ms Ambore that if she does not want a case to be registered against her she should pay Rs five lakh to him as bribe. After bargaining, the matter was settled at Rs 25,000.

Accused Patil had also called her to Dahisar Police station to meet Chheda, but, it was not done there. From there they came down to Santacruz police, where Ms Chheda and Ms Ambore met each other in presence of Patil. At that point of time, Ms Chheda denied that she had given any money to Ms Ambore.

Fed-up with harassment of Patil, she lodged a complaint with ACB office, Worli. While accepting the first instalment of Rs 5,000, he was arrested.
