Meghalaya govt gives power generation top priority

Shillong, April 02 (UNI) Meghalaya's Deputy Chief Minister, in-charge planning, Dr Mukul M Sangma said that top priority was being given to power generation, transmission, grid connectivity and rural electrification in the state for the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12), including annual plan for 2007-08.

Answering to a query of Meghalaya Democratic Party MLA P T Sawkmie, Dr Sangma said agriculture and allied sectors with strong emphasis on horticulture, including post harvesting management and processing was given second priority.

He said the third priority was laid on roads and bridges for ensuring better connectivity.

Others in the merit of priority lists includes Sericulture and Weaving for generation of income and employment to the women folk, Tourism infrastructure and tourism services, Trade with Bangladesh and creation of infrastructure for the same, Decentralization of planning and involvement of the people in the development process, Social Services like education, health, water supply and nutrition and poverty alleviation and employment generation in rural areas through Rural Development Programmes, he added.
