Massive demo condemning Sri Lankan Navy's 'firing' on Tamils

Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu Apr 2 (UNI) Condemning the Sri Lankan Navy's alleged frequent firing upon fishermen from the Tamil Nadu coast and the recent killing of six at mid-sea, a massive demonstration was staged at the District Collectorate here today.

Over 10,000 people, including a large number of women, joined the demonstration, supposted by all political parties.

The primary demand was a halt to 'continued atrocities' by the Lankan Navy. Both the Centre and the state governments were urged to take expeditious steps to protect fishermen. Speakers urged the Centre to play a proactive role and take up the issue with Lanka.

Film star and DMDK president Vijayakant took part in the protest, expressing solidarity with the fisherfolk.

CPI(M) MP Bellarmine, former AIADMK minister Dalavai Sundaram, Congress former MP Dennis, former DMK legislator Bernard and leaders of CPI, MDMK, PMK and other political parties were present at the nearly two-hour long demonstration. Director of the Centre for Peace and Fisheries Development Rev Fr Soosai Raj presided.

A general strike had been called for tomorrow.
