Kudangulam Atomic Power project to be commissioned in 2007-08

Chennai, Apr 2 (UNI) The first unit of the 1000 MW capacity Kudangulam Atomic Power Project would be commissioned during 2007-08 and Tamil Nadu would get a share of 463 MW from it, Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy told the state assembly today.

Moving the demand for grants for energy department, he said the stage II of the Kaigo Atomic Power project, with a capacity of 2x200 MW would also be commissioned during 2007-08, of which Tamil Nadu's share would be 103 MW.

Mr Veerasamy said the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board's (TNEB) total generating capacity as on February was 10,098 MW, which included 5,565 MW generated from TNEB's own stations, 1,154 MW from private sector and 2,841 MW as share from the central sector generating stations.

The maximum peak demand so far reached 8,804 MW and the growth of energy consumption was expected to be of the order of eight per cent per annum. Energy consumption during 2006-07 upto February was 56,493 Million units.

To meet the increase in demand, TNEB has planned to augment its generating capacity by 11,768 MW. During 2007-08, the increase in generating capcity from state and central sectors would be 731 MW.
