Jammu, Apr 2 (UNI) Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said the glory of Jammu and Kashmir lay in its pluralistic cultural ethos, which gave ''distinction to the state at national and global levels''.

Addressing a public rally at Katra town, organised to felicitate him for according district status to Reasi, Mr Azad said the state's ''secular temperament and hospitality has added to the natural beauty the almighty has bestowed upon this part of earth.'' ''Secular characteristics and democratic fibre of our country has given it strength and respect. It is globally recognised as the world's largest republic where of people, creed, colour and religion have equal opportunity to nurture and develop in a conducive atmosphere,'' he added.

The Chief Minister said by sanctioning eight new districts and other administrative units across the state, long-standing demands of the people has been realised.

He said the step would help take the administration to every area and help speedy and equitable development.

Mr Azad said government functionaries should ensure that benefits of development schemes reached the people speedily.

He said every penny spent has to be accounted for and should match with tangible result on the ground.

The Chief Minister said that 18 years of militancy had derailed the process of development in the state ''We have set in motion development and peace processes, and taken far-reaching decisions for the benefit of the state.'' He said the administration has to properly monitor every scheme.
