Defunct mills in Kanpur fail to figure in poll manifestos

Kanpur, Apr 2 (UNI) The coming Uttar Pradesh Assembly election seems to have disappointed the general voters here following no commitment from any political party either to restart locked factories or improve the power situation here.

According to official statistics, major mills lying defunct in Kanpur include National Textile Corporation's New Victoria Mill, Meur Mill, Laxmi Ratan Tata Mill, Artherton Mill, Swadeshi Cotton Mill and British India Corporation Elgin Mill.

More than 20,000 labourers have been directly affected due to the closure of these mills.

Some people even allege that big investors and land sharks are eyeing the prime lands of these units.

A prominent social worker Ajay Gupta lamented that although Kanpur generates revenues worth Rs 22,000 crore every year, the power situation has remained dismal.
