CM clarifies altering the spelling of Puducherry

Puducherry, Apr 2: The administration would consider altering the spelling of 'Puducherry' to 'Pudhucherry,' Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the Assembly today.

Replying to a question from Leader of the Opposition A M H Nazeem, Mr Rangasamy said the present spelling was based on gazette notification and the Puducherry Linguistic and Cultural Centre here.

The Chief Minister said he had already received some written representations and would do the needful through proper channel.

Earlier, Mr Nazeem pointed out the change in the spelling may lead to a change in history since the pronounciation also changed.
