India committed to removing all barriers in SAARC:PM

New Delhi, Apr 1 (UNI) Ahead of the 14th SAARC Summit here on April 3-4, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed India's full commitment to removing barriers to the exchange of goods, people and ideas within the region.

''The time is now ripe to reconnect the subcontinent to itself and to the larger Asian neighbourhood,'' he said in a message to the South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) today.

Dr Singh emphasised that the media could be an important catalyst in promoting the process of integrating the region.

''I hope that SAFMA, as one of the existing forums for interaction of senior media persons from the SAARC nations, would utilise the Journalists' Summit to discuss the importance of the free flow of information, media personnel and media products within the SAARC region," he said.

In her message to the two-day SAFMA meet being held on the eve of the SAARC Summit, Congress President Sonia Gandhi hoped that the journalists' gathering would further stregthen the political, economic, social and cultural ties between neighbours in South Asia.

Leader of the Opposition L K Advani also sent his good wishes for the success of the journalists' conclave.
