IIT to be set up in Medak: YSR

Hyderabad, Apr 1 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today announced that the government has decided to set up the ambitious 'Indian Institute of Technology' (IIT) campus at Kandi site in Medak district, as per the recommendation of the 'high-power committee', constituted by the state government.

Addressing presspersons here, Dr Reddy said the government had finalised the Kandi site to establish the IIT campus even after the opposition parties demanded that the premier institute be set up at Basara in Adilabad district, for which the Assmebly also adopted unanimous resolutions for two times.

Stating that three Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) centres would be set up at Edupulapaya in Kadapa district, Nuzivedy in Krishna district and in Basara, he said the three centres would function on the lines of IIIT Hyderabad, which also came under its purview.

The government had allocated Rs 30 crore each to the three IIIT centres which would start functioning from July 2008, the Chief Minsiter said, adding that every institute would take yearly 300 students in all engineering disciplines.

The Planning Commission had agreed in principle to provide financial assistance to the upcoming three IIIT centres, Dr Reddy said.
