New Delhi, Mar 31 (UNI) Bharatiya Janashakti Party leader Uma Bharti today said former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani should introspect as to why the Hindus were allegedly drifting away from the BJP.

Talking to newspersons here, Ms Bharti referred to the statement by BJP chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Singh charging her of dividing Hindu votes.

''The BJP has failed to get simple majority in all assembly elections after 1993. There has a decline in BJP strength since then.'' ''Therefore the charge is baseless. In fact the patriarchs of the BJP--Mr Vajpayee and Mr Advani--should do some kind of introspection to understand the causes of the party's decline,'' she added.

Observing that the BJP was going away from its ideology, she said the party had become so desperate that it was not shying of shaking hands with a party like Apna Dal, allegedly lobbying for underworld don Abu Salem, to grab power in Uttar Pradesh.

Ms Bharti said there was no difference between the Congress and BJP as both the parties were not bothered about national security and the problems of the people.

Regarding Hinduism, she said the word was often used by political parties to detract the people's attention from issues like water, power, road, shelter and jobs.

''BJP had been in power for six years it never talked about building a temple in Ayodhya, although it had come to power on temple issue,'' she said.

The Congress had been using the term communalism to further its appeasement policy only, she added.
