Vadodara, Mar 31: Superintendent Narsinhbhai Manjibhai Rathod and Inspector Rajnish Mishra of Customs and Central Excise Office (Sales Tax Division II) were suspended from service here for accepting a bribe of Rs 7,000 from a businessman.

Mishra, who was at large since Wednesday, surrendered to the police on thursday and was later produced in court, which sent him to judicial custody.

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths had caught Rathod red-handed a day before Rajnish was arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs 7,000.

The two customs official are now facing inquiry after the complainant, Mr Srinivasan, who runs his own classes in mobile repairing in the Manubhai tower of Sayajigunj area here, had brought the matter to the notice of ACB.

The duo had told Mr Srinivasan that since he had no Sales Tax (ST) registration, he would have to pay a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh. The businessman, however, expressed his inability to pay such a huge sum and the duo agreed for Rs 50,000.

However, when Mr Srinivasan said he could only pay Rs 7,000, the duo agreed and asked him to bring the amount at a parking plot a few days later. He then informed the ACB who apprehended Rathod red-handed while taking bribe.
