Sugarcane grower ends life in Beed

Beed, Maharashtra, Mar 30 (UNI) A sugarcane grower who allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison on March 27 in frustration over delay in lifting of his crop, has died in the Government hospital at Ambejogai, official sources said here tonight.

Fifty-two-year-old Kerba Kadam, a resident of Salegaon-Kothala in Majalgaon tehsil of the district, consumed poison at his hometown on March 27. He was rushed to Swami Ramanand Tirth Rural Hospital at Ambejogai, where undergoing medical treatment. He died late last night, Resident Deputy Collector Mohan Katte told reporters.

The farmer had produced sugarcane on his 1.5 acre farm and was frustrated due to delay in lifting of his crop by the Baidhyanath Sugar Factory, of which he was a member, the sources said.

The farmer had sit on a fast on January 26 before the Regional Office of the Joint Director Sugar at Aurangabad.

He had reportedly issued a warning to the district administration that he could take an extreme step, like ending his life, if his produce was not lifted immediately.

The farmer is survived by his wife and two sons, Mr Katte added.
