Kiln grounded: four killed, three wounded

Madurai, Mar 31 (UNI) Four people were crushed to death and three injured when heaps of yet to be burnt bricks, stacked in rows, at a kiln fell on them at Pottalupatti near Usilampatti town in this district early today.

Police said the victims were sleeping in the kiln when the accident took place.

One of the victims, V Kubendran (30) of Pappampatti, was the proprietor of the kiln, while another, K Vignesh (14), was former's relative from Bangalore. The other two deceased, R Senthil (21) of Sokkathevanpatti and P Pavunraj (17) of Aryapatti, were workers at the brick-making unit, the police said.

Vignesh and two of the injured had come from Bangalore for the annual temple festival. After the late night cultural festivities at the holy place, they preferred to sleep at the kiln, the police added.

The bodies of the four deceased were moved to the Usilampatti Government Hospital for post-mortem.

While two of the injured were undergoing treatment at the Usilampatti Government Hospital, the other has been referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital here.
