Centre provides Rs 8199.72 lakhs to ST students in NE

Agartala, Mar 31 (UNI) The Centre has provided a Post-Matric Scholarship of Rs 8199.72 lakhs to the ST students in the six North Eastern states during the last fiscal.

According to official sources, Nagaland received the highest with Rs 2694.79 followed by Asom with Rs 2360.46, Manipur (Rs 1316.45), Mizoram (Rs 1153.02), Meghalaya (Rs 550) and Tripura (Rs 125) under the Grant-in-aid scheme.

Under the scheme, the Centre would provide financial assistance to ST students for professional, technical as well as non-professional and non-technical course at various levels.

This scheme also includes correspondence course, distance and continuing education at recognized institutions.

The Tribal Affairs Ministry's scheme is being implemented by all the state governments and Union Territories, that receive 100 per cent Central assistance over and above the committed liability which is required to be borne by them from their own budgetary provisions, sources said.
