Patna, Mar 31 (UNI) Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi today alleged a tug of war was on among the UPA coalition partners to ''extract political mileage'' over the proposed reservation to OBCs in elite educational institutions.

Mr Modi said the BJP strongly favoured reservation for the OBCs in top educational institutions but the dilly-dallying approach of the Centre on the issue led to the Apex Court's stay.

''The decision of the apex court staying reservation to OBCs till August this year's ''unfortunate,'' he said, adding the UPA government was ''responsible for the deadlock''.

Referring to the directive of the Supreme Court on seeking the latest data related to population strength of OBCs and their social conditions, Mr Modi pointed out that if reservation could be provided to them in central government services on the basis of the 1931 caste census, there was no reason to deny similar facilities on the basis of the same Census.

Meanwhile, state BJP president Radha Mohan Singh told reporters here that the Centre should take effective remedial measures to clear the hurdles.
