17 animals rescued from island

Bhopal, Mar 31 (UNI) All 17 animals marooned on an island in Indira Sagar reservoir on the Narmada river near Chhanera in Khandwa district have been rescued under a special operation.

The rescued animals, including seven cows, five oxen, one neelgai and calves, have been kept at village Kukdhal.

The operation by Forest and Animal Husbandry officials was carried out last week following media reports that the animals marooned on islands formed in the Indira Sagar dam were on the verge of death due to non-availability of food, official sources said today.

Another operation was carried out to shift 15 monkeys to safer places.

Two relief teams have been constituted for prompt action in case such information about marooned cattle was received, the sources said, adding one team would keep a watch on Punasa reservoir and the other at Harsood.
