UPA trampling on national sentiments to destroy Ramsetu: BJP
New Delhi, Mar 30 (UNI) Expressing his displeasure against the UPA's 'disrespectful attitude' towards Hindu sentiments and lord Rama's bridge Ramsetu, the BJP today accused the ruling coalition of trampling the sentiments of majority community whereas the foreign rulers had not dared to destroy the ancient cultural heritage.
BJP president Rajnath Singh said the UPA had despatched dredger named 'Aquarius' to destroy the legendary Ramsetu to make way for Sethu Samundram project near Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on auspicious Ram Navami three days ago. The existence of the bridge under the sea was confirmed by satellite images. The government was bent upon dredging the ancient bridge of Ramayana-times.
The government, he alleged, had chosen to completely ignore the strategic aspects of the project. By opting to accept the present route, both India and Sri Lanka which had accepted to treat the waters between the two countries as 'historic waters' under the UN maritime law would get into a trap of international maritime border. The opening the present route would endanger the thorium deposits which could face extinction, he said.
