Orissa Assembly adjourned over demand on Panchayat election

Bhubaneswar, Mar 30 (UNI) Noisy scene prevailed in the Orissa Assembly today forcing the Chair to adjourn the House thrice and finally for the lunch as the Opposition Congress disrupted the proceedings of House, demanding debate on the Panchayat elections.

The trouble started during the zero hour when Congress member Nalini Kanta Mohanty, rising on a point of order, wanted to know from the Speaker about the fate of the their adjournment motion on the ''misuse of money and muscle power in Panchayat election in the state.

Mr Mohanty opposed to the debate on the Vote on Account ignoring the adjournment motion. At this Speaker Maheswar Mohanty said due to scarcity of the time he was taking up the debate on the Vote on Account.

This enraged the Opposition, who rushed into the well and started shouting slogan demanding debate on the largescale irregularities and use of official machinery in the Panchayat elections in the state.

But BJD member Ranendra Pratap Swain objected to it, stating that the House could not discuss on the elections affairs. He charged the Opposition, saying it was the Congress, which used money and muscle power in the election.

Seeing the adamant attitude of the Opposition inside the well in support of their demand, the Speaker then adjourned the House for 30 minutes at 1145 hours.
