Mahajan murder trial adjourned till April 3

Mumbai, Mar 30 (UNI) The hearing in Pramod Mahajan murder trial was today adjourned till April 3 as prime witness Ms Rekha Mahajan was not present in the court for cross-examination as she had gone to Ambejogai to see her ailing mother.

As soon as the proceedings began, Special Public Prosecutor Ujwal Nikam moved an application seeking adjournment of the cross-examination of Ms Rekha Mahajan as she had gone to her native place to see her 84-year-old mother, who was unwell.

Defence advocate H H Ponda too gave no objection to the plea.

Additional Sessions Court judge S P Davare granted permission and adjourned the matter till April 3.

The Court however, told Nikam that the matter was being adjourned due to a genuine problem and said that henceforth the trial should continue on a day-to-day basis as per the Criminal Procedure Act. The trial should be conducted at least three days a weak, it said.

On the last occasion, during her examination-in-chief deposition, Ms Rekha Mahajan had identified Pravin Mahajan as the person who had fired at Pramod Mahajan and also the gun used by Pravin for the murder.

On April 22, last year, Pravin had allegedly fired three rounds of bullets at Pramod, elder brother and former BJP General Secretary at around 0745 hours. Mr Mahajan died on May 3 at Hinduja Hospital.

After firing, Pravin had surrendered himself to the Worli police along with the fire arm. Since than he is in custody.
