Census records huge elephant population in TN

A
large
number
of
elephant
population
was
sighted
at
Sirumugai
range
in
the
district
during
the
Wildlife
Census
held
in
Coimbatore
district
recently.
Forest
official
sources
said
Leopard
population
was
distributed
throughout
the
district
while
Hyena
was
only
in
Sirumugai
range.
A
total
of
90
volunteers
along
with
forest
officials
and
environmentalists
were
engaged
in
the
exercise
in
43
blocks
of
the
district.
They
adopted
two
methods
for
this
census,
which
included
the
black
count
method
and
scat
and
pug
mark
method.
They
have
recorded
a
total
of
19
species
in
the
black
count
method
and
six
species
of
carnivores
in
the
scat
and
pug
mark
count.
