Punjab agri university failed to increase productivity

Chandigarh, Mar 30: The impact of research activity by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), particularly introduction of improved variety of seed did not result in increase of agri-productivity in Punjab.

According to the CAG report for the year 2006, the functioning of the PAU has revealed that the funds and financial management systems were defective.

According to the report, this was evident from the fact that balance sheets of PAU were not prepared, calculation of deficit was inaccurate, advances were outstanding for many years and recoveries from client organisations were not effected.

The report noted that extension trainings were not organised as envisaged. Utilisation of infrastructure suffered from major deficiencies and large tract of fallow land was not utilised for agriculture.

The University failed to avail the waiver of electricity charges on irrigation tubewells granted by the government, the report said.

Ungainful expenditure was incurred on running of the University Press and physical verification of the library has not been done as per provisions.
