New dam proposed downstream of Mullaperiyar Dam

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 29 (UNI) A new dam to replace the century-old Mullaperiyar Dam is proposed to be constructed 1,300 feet downstream without causing major environment problems, the Kerala Assembly was informed today.

In a written reply, Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran said a preliminary survey had already been conducted for the construction of the new dam in view of the findings that the existing structure was not safe.

He said the new dam would neither pose any major threat to forest reserve nor cause displacement of human settlement. However, further experts studies would have to be conducted in this matter.
