New Delhi, Mar 29 (UNI) Terming as ''unfortunate'' the Supreme Court staying OBC quota, the CPI(M) today urged the UPA government to take necessary steps to ensure that the legislation passed by Parliament providing for 27.5 per cent reservation for OBCs in centrally-run educational institutions is implemented.

''The apex court's judgement has ignored the fact that there are clear cut lists of OBCs in all the states. It is on this basis that there are reservations for them in educational institutions in many states,'' the CPI(M) Polit Bureau said in a statement here.

The stay given by the two-member bench of the Supreme Court on the implementation of 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes in the centrally-run educational institutions is ''unfortunate'', the Left party said.

On the issue of implementation of the Mandal Commission Report, 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in government jobs was decided. The Supreme Court had upheld the reservation along with exclusion of the creamy layer.

''What was done for central government jobs has now been extended to centrally-sponsored educational institutions by a legislation in Parliament,'' the Left party added.

The Supreme Court today stayed till furher orders the operation of government notification issued in January this year providing 27.5 per cent reservations for OBCs in the centrally-run institutions such as IITs, IIMs and Post Graduate medical science courses.
