New Delhi, Mar 29 (UNI) Affirming its commitment to reservation for SC, ST, OBCs and economically backward sections of society with due recognition for merit, the BJP today alleged that the UPA Government had not taken due caution or done proper home work before the Supreme Court.

Commenting on the Apex Court staying 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs in Centrally run higher professional educational institutions like IITs, IIMs and Post Graduate Medical Sciences, BJP Spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar said it was evident from the Court's order that the government had messed up the case by a half-hearted attempt to state its position before the Judiciary.

Mr Prasad said the BJP supported the reservation principle but the government had failed miserably to convince the Court with adequate homework and exercise of caution. Reservation as an issue had the sanction of the Constitution, the country and the Parliament but the failure of the government was obvious.

The bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Lokeshwar Singh Panta stayed, till further orders, the operation of government notification on the ground that the government had failed to provide any authentic and reliable data to justify its reservation policy.

The next hearing has been fixed in the third week of August.
