Women's seat quota to take effect soon

Kohima, Mar 28: Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has told the state assembly that the provisions of article 243-T of Nagaland Municipal (First Amendment) Act, 2006 regarding reservation of seats in municipalities would soon come into effect.

81 wards, out of 229 wards under 19 Municipal Councils and Town Councils are reserved for women.

However, not a single woman was elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly so far.

Replying to a question in the Budget Session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly here yesterday, Mr Rio said that the newly inserted section 23A of Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001 lays down a step-by-step procedure for effecting reservation.

According to the Nagaland Municipal(First Amendment) Act, 2006, reservation of seats in municipalities should come into effect as mandated under Article 243-T of the Constitution of India in the Nagaland Gazette on 13th September, 2006.
