Jumbo runs amok, kills mahout

Thrissur, Mar 27 (UNI) A mahout was killed when an elephant ran amok at Thaikattussery in Ollur near here today.

The tusker named Devidasan, owned by the Techikkottukavu Devaswom, killed the first mahout Kumaran (29), hailing from Palakkad district.

Trouble started when Devidasan attacked two other elephants brought for a procession at the Sri Durga Bhagavathi Temple.

While the mahouts managed to chain the other two elephants, they could not control the excited pachyderm, who killed the mahout and damaged public property.

After three hours of sustained efforts, the mahouts chained Devidasan in the presence of experts and police.

The experts attributed the provocative behaviour of the tusker to extreme heat conditions.
