Aizawl, Mar 27: The families living below poverty line (BPL) are increasing in Mizoram, the state Local Administration Department Minister H Vanlalauva informed the Assembly yesterday.

Replying to a question of Congress legislator R Lalzirliana, the minister said presently the state has about 24,680 BPL families with 97,255 people.

He said as per the 2006-07 report, the number of BPL families in Aizawl alone had increased to 13,922 from 8241 families in 1999.

However, there was a fall in the number of BPL families in 2003-04 as compared to the 1999 record in a survey conducted.

An explanation for the annual rise in the number of BPL families and individual given by the minister is that those BPL individuals living within a single family unit have moved out of parental homes after getting married.
