Sangam demands welfare board for artisans

Tiruchirapalli, Mar 26: The Tamil Nadu Viswakarma Artisans Sangam has appealed to the Central and state governments to constitute a separate Board for the traditional artisans on national basis to ensure their welfare.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the first state-level conference of the Sangam, here last evening.

Briefing the media on the deliberations of the conference, today its founder K P Subbaiyan said 'Viswakarmas', the traditional artisans of the country, were adversely affected by the entry of corporates into the field.

He allged that large scale investment and mechanisation had severely affected the cottage industries driving the voiceless goldsmiths, carpenters and blacksmith to abject poverty.

He also charged that the Labour Welfare Board for Traditional Artisans instituted by the Tamil Nadu Governement also had failed to meet their demands. Hence, the Central and state governments should form a separate board to ensure their welfare, he said.
