KRRS to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha on Mar 30
Mysore,
Mar
26:
The
Karnataka
Rajya
Raitha
Sangha
(KRRS)
has
decided
to
lay
siege
to
the
Vidhana
Soudha,
the
State
Secretariat,
on
March
30,
demanding
that
the
State
Government
rush
to
the
rescue
of
sugarcane
farmers
in
the
State.
Addressing
media
persons
here,
KRRS
President
K
S
Puttaniah
said
thousands
of
sugarcane
farmers
were
expected
to
participate
in
the
protest
on
March
30.
The
State
Government
had
not
taken
any
initiative,
despite
agitations
and
protests
by
farmers
for
many
days.
He
said
that
in
Mandya
district
alone,
about
40
lakh
tonnes
of
sugarcane
had
been
crushed
by
sugar
companies
and
another
ten
to
15
lakh
tonnes
were
yet
to
be
crushed.
However,
the
companies
had
declared
that
they
could
not
afford
to
take
any
more
sugarcane
for
crushing.
Hence,
the
State
Government
should
intervene
and
lend
a
helping
hand
to
the
farmers.
He
urged
the
Government
to
convene
a
meeting
of
sugar
factory
managements
to
ask
them
to
purchase
the
remaining
sugarcane
from
the
farmers
by
providing
subsidy.
