Kancheepuram, Mar 25: The temple town of Kancheepuram will soon have a 51-foot giant stone lamp structure to be erected before the commemorative hall being constructed in the memory of Sri Chandrasekarendrasaraswathi Swamigal, the 68th peetadipathi of the Kanchi Sankara Mutt.

A 70-tonne stone transported to Orikai, the site of the commemorative structure, near here, from Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh was unloaded by a giant crane this evening for this purpose.

The 42-foot monolith would soon take the shape of the lamp with artisans working feverishly to complete the work in time for the opening of the commemorative hall next year.

Spread over an area of seven acre, the Rs 14 crore 100-column hall would reflect the art work of the Chola, Pallava and Nayak kings, sources said.
