Raids conducted at 2 places, 25 held for betting
Mumbai, Mar 25: After India lost to Sri Lanka in the crucial World Cup tie on Friday, the police have conducted raids at two places here and nabbed 25 persons for their alleged involvement in betting on the match.
Police today said they conducted the raids yesterday at Chembur and Tardeo to check the match-related betting activities and took into custody 25 people for their alleged involvement in betting on the match played in the Carribeans.
Twenty-four people were apprehended from New Aarti Social Group in a shopping arcade at Chembur, an eastern suburb, for their alleged involvement in betting on the India-Sri Lanka match on Friday. However, the owner of the premises, Krishnan Nair, is absconding.
In the raid, the police team has seized 11 mobile phones, a TV set and betting-related documents worth Rs 93,043 from the spot, police said.
In another raid at Vastushilp building at Tardeo in South Mumbai, one Shailesh Bohara was arrested for gambling on the match and recovered cash worth Rs 70,000 and four mobile phones, two TV sets and betting-related documents worth Rs 1,21,400.
All of them were later produced before a Metropolitan Court, which remanded them to police custody till March 28, police added.
