MGL becomes the largest gas distribution Co
Mumbai, Mar 25: Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), a joint venture between GAIL (India), the BG Group (UK) and the government of Maharashtra has become the largest gas distribution company in the country by customer base.
So far MGL, which has been working to grow its compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) distribution network in Mumbai and its outskirts, has already connected over 2,88,000 homes and 859 small commercial and industrial establishments, an official statement from the company here today said.
Also, it supplies CNG to over 1,79,000 vehicles which include around 1,24,000 rickshaws and 52,000 taxis/cars in Mumbai, Thane and Mira-Bhayander through its widespread distribution network of about 212 km of steel and 1987 km of MDPE pipeline system.
MGL will expand its pipeline infrastructure network and consumer base in areas such as Thane, Mira Bhayander, Vashi-Navi Mumbai, Belapur, Kalyan-Dombili, Pune and other areas. The company also plans to distribute PNG to industries located in MIDC areas like Tarapur, Taloja, Roha, Thane-Belapur and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Thus the company plans to triple its gas sales in next three years.
MGL's PNG is widely used by hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants, hotels, temples, crematoria and flight kitchens. In fact, supply of PNG in and around Mumbai has made around 25 lakh LPG cylinders per annum available for redeployment to other alternate rural and semi-urban areas. As regards, almost all the taxis and rickshaws in the city have already been converted to CNG. Apart from it, CNG is also being supplied to the public transport buses of the Municipal Corporations of Mumbai and Thane, postal vans, school buses and light and heavy commercial vehicles. Use of CNG today is reducing vehicular emissions by more than 7,20,000 kg per day, making a significant improvement in the city's environment.
