EU's Solana says door still open for Iran talks
Berlin, Mar 25: EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said today the bloc remained committed to seeking a negotiated solution to end the Iranian nuclear dispute and that he had international backing to resume contacts with Tehran.
''We are committed to seeking a negotiated solution to the nuclear question,'' Solana, who is in Berlin for an EU summit, said in a statement after the UN Security Council imposed financial sanctions and an arms ban on Iran over its nuclear programme.
''That is why, alongside today's UNSC resolution, I have been asked by the countries that have been dealing most closely with Iran to make contact with Dr Ali Larijani in order to see whether we can find a route to negotiations,'' he added.
Solana held four months of fruitless talks with Larijani, Tehran's top nuclear negotiator, last year before the UN Security Council in December backed a first set of sanctions.
