205 arrested for illegal drug deal in Mizoram last year

Aizawl, Mar 25: As many as 205 persons, including 63 Myanmarese nationals, were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychedelic Substances Act last year in Mizoram.

Replying to a query in the state Assembly,state Excise&Narcotic minister Dr Lalzama said, ''Myanmarese have constituted only 30.7 per cent of persons arrested for illegal peddling of contraband items including heroin, ganja, and diazepam in the state last year.'' Altogether 336 persons, including two Myanmarese, were arrested for dealing in proxyvon - the most common abused drug in Mizoram and other pharmaceutical drugs during the same period Under Assam Drugs Control Act.

Even though heroin is believed to be smuggled mainly from Myanmar, pain-killer proxyvon, which has claimed a much larger number of lives, comes from Asom, he added.
