Bangalore, Mar 23: Ubiquitous banners, buntings and cutouts are an eyesore in all major towns. The government may soon put an end to the menace.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday told the Legislative Assembly he was for enacting legislation imposing a ban on publicity materials, including posters, banners and cutouts, in public places. "I am ready to introduce a Bill in this regard if all members agree to it," he said.

He was replying to a question by Mr Jayaprakash Hegde (Ind), who sought to know what steps the government was taking to check this nuisance.

The Chief Minister also said publicity materials mar the aesthetics of a city. Mere enactment of legislation is not a solution. All political parties should arrive at a consensus and direct their respective workers not to disfigure public places.

He said time and again instructions have been issued to the local body in the City to remove them and deadlines fixed. Though the BBMP has been taking action, these materials keep cropping up, he said.

There was "no positive response" from any member on the suggestion made by the CM.
