Sheila Dikshit calls for change in water consumption pattern

New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today emphasized the need to change water consumption patterns if people in the national capital wanted to avoid being in 'water' troubles in the next 15 to 20 years.

Delhi consumed 256 litres of water per capita per day, which was one of the highest rates of consumption for any city in the world, she said at a seminar 'Coping with Water Scarcity; The Urban Scenario' organised on the occasion of the World Water Day here.

''30-40 years ago, the water table in Delhi was rising to an extent that there was media speculation about the Parliament House being afloat. The situation now is completely reversed, with the water table declining at an alarming rate,'' she said while emphasizing a need for a change in people's mentality and small modifications in behavior that would result in big improvement.

The CM also inaugurated a photo exhibition and released WaterAid India publications that focused on the theme of the celebrations.
