Mamoni desires to mediate on boundary issue

Itanagar, Mar 22 (UNI) Jnanpith Awardee Dr. Mamoni Roisom Goswami has expressed her willingness to be a mediator in resolving the decade-old border row between Asom and Arunachal Pradesh.

The popular litterateur of Asom, who is on a visit to the state capital, told reporters while participating in a function at Rajiv Gandhi University, Doimuk yesterday that she was not fully aware of the issue, but expressed optimism that an early solution could be found but for sincere and concerted efforts.

''The intellectuals and civil society of Asom have expressed urgent desire for peace and have written to the Local Commission constituted by the apex court, for the same,'' she explained, while pointing out that Asom government should give her the green signal to mediate and provide her with all the details.

Dr Goswami, who is famed for her diplomatic acumen and social concern that reflected in her endeavors in mediating between ULFA, Centre and the Asom government, further commented that no country or state could progress without peace.

''Peace is the pre-requisite for any development but it cannot come from the barrels of guns'', she observed.

Impressed and enchanted by the atmosphere of peace, serenity and tranquility in the state, she said that Arunachal was indeed an oasis of peace and so different from rest of the North Eastern states.

''I would love to write a novel on this land of peace and hopefully it should be a best seller,'' she added.
