New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) After discovering huge quantities of oil and gas in Rajasthan, Cairn India has discovered substantial freshwater resources in Barmer.

The company had made a commitment to the Rajasthan government that it would use water only from saline aquifers for its drilling operations, a statement said.

Cairn had commissioned a study for identifying saline water resources to locate such reserves. Even the local authorities in Barmer also requested the company to assist them in a similar study to understand and define the extent, nature and status of the freshwater resource in the Barmer area, it added.

Following this, Cairn commissioned a freshwater study and appointed UK-based Water Management Consultants for expert assistance.

The study helped in understanding the hydrogeology of the Barmer Basin, and in defining the extent and availability of the freshwater resources of the area.

Cairn has decided to invest in development of these freshwater resources for the local community. The move is also part of the company's corporate social responsibility initiative.
