Bangalore, Mar 21: Tata BP Solar has planned to set up a solar mega plant of 128 MW in the city with an investment of 100 million Dollars in the next one year to meet the demands of Indian and global solar PV (Photovoltaic) markets.

The company inaugurated a 36 MW solar PV production line at a cost of 20 million Dollars as a step towards realising the designed potential of 300 MW at its site here today.

''This new production line of 36 MW will help the company to double its cell manufacturing capacity to reach 50 MW a year,'' Tata BP Solar Chief Executive Officer K Subramanya told reporters here.

The next phase of expansion would see an additional 128 MW of cell manufacturing capacity at an estimated cost of 100 million Dollars in the next one year, he said.

Mr Subramanya said the Tata BP Solar Board expected the total investment required to achieve the plant's full designed potential of 300 MW to be in the order of 300 million Dollars by 2010, generating a sizeable number of jobs directly and many more indirectly.

''This invesment will ensure that Tata BP Solar, already a leader in cell manufacturing and designing solar solutions, retained its position as the largest manufacturer of solar PV products in the Indian subcontinent,'' he said.
