Aizawl, Mar 21 (UNI) The Opposition MLAs in Mizoram Assembly today expressed concerned over the government's recently announced turmeric policy.

The Opposition criticised Agriculture Minister H Rammawi's claim that the turmeric policy could alleviate poverty among farmers.

Earlier a similar ginger policy had left the farmers in sheer disappointment, they stated.

Congress MLA H Rohluna said, '' The government has planned to buy varieties of turmeric seeds within the state but this may not be sensible as the market depends on the variety.'' Meanwhile, Agriculture minister said the government had decided to provide each farmer with five quintals of turmeric seeds, purchased for Rs 8.50 per kilo for home-grown and Rs 16.60 per kilo for imported at 'collection centres' across the state.

'' The MNF ministry has failed to buy gingers at the promised Rs 10 per kilo. The gingers rotted and this time the turmeric will face the same fate due to the immature policies,'' Congress MLA R Lalzirliana said.
