Shillong, Mar 21 (UNI) Making a solemn resolve to serve the Nation with renewed vigour and determination Assam Rifles (AR), one of the oldest para-military force of the country, is celebrating its 172nd anniversary.

AR had grown in strength of 750 combatants from its inception in 1835 to 65,000 troops, and is now a 46 battalion strong Force.

The 'Force' had participated in a number of operations including both the World Wars, Operation Pawan (Sri Lanka), Operation Rakshak (Jammu and Kashmir) and is currently combating the insurgency in the north east.

It had displayed exceptional gallantry in all its years of existence and during World War I, it was honoured with the title of 'Rifles'.

The force had played a pivotal role in combating insurgency, effective border management, civic action and had won accolades in aid to civil authorities.

Despite the inhospitable terrain and weather, the 'Force' has effectively implemented the 'Border Area Development Programmes' which had been instrumental in integrating the people into the mainstream of the society.

Hailed as 'Sentinels of the North East' and 'Friends of the Hill People', the history of the Assam Rifles is inextricably linked with the development of the north east.
