Armed escort for all trains leaving Chennai at night
Chennai, Mar 21 (UNI) As part of enhancing passenger safety and strengthening security, armed escort will be provided to all night trains leaving from Chennai Central and Egmore stations.
Government Railway Police DSP Muthu Nalliappan told reporters here today the move to enhance security had come in the wake of robbing of passengers of the Yeshwantpur-Guwuhati express at gun point by a six-member armed gang near Krishnarajpauram early yesterday.
To begin with, night trains to Bangalore today would have armed escorts and the security would be extended to all trains from Chennai Central and Egmore stations. They would have police GRP and RPF personnel.
'Each train will have four to five policemen, headed by an Assistant Sub-Inspector, Head Constable and two to three Constables'.
Meanwhile, Railway Police sources told UNI about 70 trains leave Central and Egmore at night and a majority would have police escort.
In some places, the trains would have either GRP or RPF personnel as part of the enhanced security measures and passenger-safety.
